Asphalt shingles have protective granules that are regularly shed off the roofing material, ending up in gutters, downspouts, and even on the ground. It is called shingle granule loss, and it is a common roofing problem many homeowners face. This, however, poses the question: “Is it something to worry about?”
Harmony Home Improvement, one of the leading residential roofing contractors in the local area, sheds light on the matter below.
Short Answer: Not Necessarily
Granule loss in asphalt shingles doesn’t always indicate that a roofing system has been damaged. In fact, it occurs even before installing the actual product. Excess granules get scattered around during packaging and shipping. During installation, they still shed off granules as roofers handle, cut, nail and step on them.
However, it doesn’t mean the material can no longer be used. In a package of asphalt shingles, it is expected that about 12 to 15 percent of the granules will not firmly attached to covering the roofing material surface.
Aging Is a Factor
It is important to take note that asphalt shingles are designed to weather. Once installed, the roof will still shed off those protective granules as it gets exposed to intense heat, wind-driven rain and other elements. The real cause for concern, however, is when the roof surface shows its age.
Asphalt shingle roofs nearing the end of their service life are characterized by large amounts of granules as well as bald spots on the surface, revealing the material’s substrate. These, on top of other noticeable forms of damage, occurred over the years, would be enough to necessitate residential roof replacement.
